Strategic Thinking on the Campaign Map

by | 2/27/2006 14:02 PM

The newest addition to our RTW Strategy Section, yakcamkir's article, suitably titled Thinking Strategically on the Campaign Map guides us through his thought process employed as he plays a campaign game. An in-depth article, it's a good read for anyone wishing to improve their campaign gameplay!
This is a rough guide to my Campaign doctrine, detailing how I come up with a long-term strategy for any scenario. The guide is intended to explain the basis to my version of successful strategic thought and newcomers to RTW who have problems understanding how to think strategically on the Campaign Map can use this method of thinking to come up with unique strategies for unique situations and adapt the strategy they are planning to new situations that crop up.

New Medieval II Interview at GameSpot!

by | 2/19/2006 16:52 PM

Over the past month much has been revealed about Medieval II, the next TW title, and recently GameSpot got the opportunity to interview Bob Smith, the project director of the game:

GS: Finally, what's going to be new for Total War fans in Medieval 2? We'll have amazing graphics and intense battles, but how will the game evolve the series in terms of gameplay?

BS: Medieval 2 raises the bar for Total War games right across the board--in the campaign, the battles, and the multiplayer. There's no doubt that this will be the greatest Total War experience ever. There are new factions; new units; new unit abilities, including the opportunity for archers to place spikes to impale onrushing cavalry; and new siege weaponry, including cannons that can be put to work on the new, more-spectacular sieges, which will involve stripping away layers of defenses. Plus, of course, there will be improved artificial intelligence on both the battlefield and the campaign map.

Little new facts are given in the interview, but it's a good read, and new screenshots are included! You can read the interview in its entirety here.

Thanks to Ichbinian for the heads-up!

CA's Surprise: An Alexander Expansion?

by | 2/15/2006 23:20 PM

A post on CA's boards suggests that the surprise from CA that we've been waiting for is an expansion for Rome: Total War. Apparently this expansion will roll back the time clock and focus on the journey of Alexander the Great. Allegedly the campaign map will stretch from Western Greece and Eprius to the Himalayas, allowing you to follow in the footsteps of the great Macedonian King.

This has yet to be confirmed by The Creative Assembly, so we'll keep you updated. Meanwhile feel free to discuss it on our forums here! And thanks to Ace_Cataphract for pointing this out to us!

Creative Assembly have something up their sleeve...

by | 2/13/2006 20:55 PM

Over the past week, the community has been aware of short paragraphs in gaming magazines suggesting a release of a new masterpiece by CA, and the most recent Total War newsletter seems to confirm it:

We'll be following this up with more Medieval 2 screens and information in the weeks ahead. However, later this week we have something rather special to announce. We can't give you the full details as yet but we can tell you to keep your eyes on this week for news of a unique new Total War release from The Creative Assembly. You heard it here first.

Well, what can I say? :-) I'm very excited about this!

New Articles and a goodbye

by | 2/11/2006 21:58 PM

I might as well get the bad news out of the way first. Adder, one of the best damn seraphs in HeavenGames, has resigned. We'll all miss you, Adder, and I think I speak for the entire community when I say you were the driving passion behind what made this site great. You can read Adder's reasons for leaving and comment in here.

On a brighter note, remember those other articles I mentioned? I wasn't lying. We have two new ones up. The first one, a lengthy article regarding the history of the Phalanx Hoplite, is written by MaximusDecimus and can be found here. The second one is a feature from pallin about the Battle of Cynoscephalae. Both are definitely worth a read, and I suggest you look at them now.

Also, all articles that were sent in before the History section was closed down for revamp should be now uploaded. If your article isn't there, email me it again.

New History Article Rings in Completion of Revamp!

by | 2/8/2006 13:27 PM

Hey all!

I know I've been quiet for awhile, and a little lazy, but the History section redesign can finally be pronounced as finished. Not much has changed that you'd notice, but there has been the addition of the "People" category. Unfortunately, some articles or images were lost, so if you do not see an article you wrote there (one that wasn't there before), please contact me as soon as you can.

To celebrate the new section, we have a new feature from Ichbinian. He's been waiting patiently ever since the revamp began, and I must say it's one of the best articles I've ever seen. It's regarding the Caesarean Legions and can be found here.

There are at least two more articles that I'll upload over the next week, so keep an eye out!
