The Descr_Strat Reference article released!

by | 3/28/2008 19:47 PM

The Mod Army marches on, liberating the world from vanilla game play one article at a time. This battle pits our very own Hussarknight against the wily Descr_Strat.txt file, and I am pleased to say that Hussarknight has been victorious, most handily smiting this file that is so important to setting the beginning variables of the singleplayer campaign.

Every settlement has its beginning stats recorded here, as with every general and every army on the map at the start of the campaign. If that were not enough, the locations of all the wonders and resources are within this file, as are the settings for every faction's diplomatic relations.

But do not take my word for it. Go here to The Descr_Strat Reference itself, located in our Game Modification - Tutorials section.

Please leave any comments or other intelligence reports in this topic in the Game Modification forum.

New Modification Article: A Guide To Descr_Model_Battle.txt

by | 3/10/2008 18:15 PM

I am back with another modding article for Rome: Total War. This time I take a look at the Descr_Model_Battle.txt file and pick it apart line by line. This is an important file in unit creation and modification, as it sets what models and skins the game uses for every unit. You can find this little gem in the site's Game Modification - Tutorials section. Or follow your mouse here.

Two new Modification Arcticles: How To Create New Unit Cards & A Guide To Export_Descr_Unit.txt

by | 3/7/2008 22:51 PM

That is right, more modding articles have rolled off the presses here at Rome: Total War Heaven. The first reveals how to create new unit cards, including how to make their backgrounds transparent. You can find it here in the Game Modification - Tutorials section. Please leave any comments here in the Game Modification forum.

The second details the Export_Descr_Unit.txt file line by line. What is this file you ask? Well, it is at the core of creating and modifying units, containing all of the internal names the game uses for every unit. These identify it in over a dozen other files. If that were not enough, it also sets all of the unit's game stats, including attack, defense, morale, cost, etc... You can find it here in the Game Modification - Tutorials section. Please leave any comments here in the Game Modification forum.

Brand New Total War Heaven Multiplayer Events Email List

by | 3/7/2008 8:43 AM

Thanks to Zen, we've set up a brand new email list so folks can keep informed about forum parties and other multiplayer events by email as well as the forums.

There's no need to worry about spam or email harvesting as only mods can post to the list and email addresses are not viewable to non-mods. We also promise to keep the number of emails to a minimum.

It's very easy to subscribe/unsubscribe and you can do it by visiting the email list page here.

"SOLO: Essays and Commentary on the Art of the Single Player

by | 3/3/2008 8:44 AM

"SOLO: Essays and Commentary on the Art of the Single Player Game" debuts at HeavenGames! This new, semi-regular column on the art and theory of designing single player games will highlight important issues in the development of games, asking challenging questions about the nature of gaming, whether games will ever meet the criteria for art, and offering practical pointers on how the best single player experiences are created by designers.

SOLO is written by Gordon Farrell, a long-time professional designer of single player campaigns for AAA games such as Empire Earth and Empires: Dawn of the Modern World. In addition, he has worked on strategy titles such as Caesar IV, Children of the Nile and BreakAway Games' Middle Eastern city builder, Arabian Lords. He is currently Lead Writer for Reverie World Studios' first game, Dawn of Fantasy, due for release in Fall 2008.

HGS regulars will recognize Gordon's work as a staple of our downloadsections, from games as diverse as Age of Empires and Caesar 3, to both Stronghold 1, Stronghold 2 and Age of Kings. In addition to his HGS mods, he has highly-rated Civilization 4 mods uploaded at CivFanatics as well.

Gordon is on the faculty of New York University, where he teaches narrative theory for video games, theory of screenwriting, and advanced studies in dramatic art. He also lectures at Marymount Manhattan College in video games, script analysis, and theatre history. In 2002, Prima Games published his essay, "The Theory of Scenario Design." His extensive professional and academic experience promises an exciting column filled with commentary on the art of games that will be both controversial and thought-provoking.

Amazon Total War Alpha Release

by | 3/2/2008 15:22 PM

I am very, very happy to say that the Alpha version of my very own Amazon: Total War is now ready for download.

Amazon Total War is a conversion for Rome Total war version 1.5. It uses the mod:switch option, so it will not interfere with any of your original game files.

ATW replaces the faction of Pontus with that of Amazonia. It includes a new culture, that of the Amazons, with new units, generals, retinue members, and traits. My inspiration for this was the Amazons of legend, and I have tried to keep everything in the mod in the spirt of those legends. So just as legend has it, the Amazons are outstanding archers and horsewomen. They also fight in the standard greek hoplite style, as well as having some troops using axes.

It can be downloaded here on Filefront.
