Actually Legionary would be an adjective, as in a Legionary Cohort being a type of Cohort. The singlular form of a man that is a memeber of a legion would be legionaire.

Actually, 'legionnaire' is a Victorianised mis-spelling of 'legionary'. A legionary is a soldier of the Legion. Multiple soldiers are referred to as 'legionaries'. 'Legionnaire' an archaic Anglicised wrong word.
