I believe some units of the modern Italian army still wear feathers in their helmets - maybe the Italian version of guards regiments.
I suppose they took the custom from the Romans.

I find the feathered icons useful in distinguishing--at a quick glance--triarii from some of the other unit cards (hastatii for example).
