Is there any advantage to disabling the Fog of War option in the Preferences file? What does FOW do exactly?

FOW=Fog Of War. You shouldn't turn it off. It is the area that you cannot see, and is blacked out.

Sorry, but I'm not sure what you mean by the area that is 'blacked out'. Does this blacked out (FOW) area apply only to Campaign mode, or is it also active in Custom Battle mode (My question was related to Custom Battle Mode).
Thanks

Thanks Black. I wont bother bout the Fog-o-War option them, as I have to admit to never having played in Campaign mode (shock horror!)

^ Agreed. It makes the game more realistic. Oh, in the "blacked-out area" you can see the terrain but not the cities or armies of the other factions (unless you're the Romans, in which case you can see the other Romans' cities and armies during the entire game).

Actually I find that you can "see" cities as if they were terrain in the fog of way, even if you havn't been there before. It's easiest to do in the deserts. If you look closely the areas aroudn where there is a settlement are greener.

^^ works indeed . Another thing you can do is try to find roads and march in the opposite way of the trade caravans. Succes guaranteed.
