1) has the automanage improved since any of the patches?
2) why in god's name do settlements show an [inaccurate?] income label on the world map? it's well known that the larger settlements always show large negative numbers becuase of the amount they pay for your army's upkeep.. so who cares? what if i want to know the overall profit of a specific settlement?

i figured it'd be in the scrolls. i'm getting so sick of managing all settlements. i wish you could just lay out a set build order for every single settlement so you could just run your armies around and gain tons of experience. oh well.. thanks !

I let the AI automanage taxes only. They set them as high as possible, and lower them if needed to restore order. Lets me worry about battles and build orders.
Life is full of challenges. You can either step up to them, or step out of the way. The ones who step up, are the ones who will someday rule the world.

I manage everything. It's not that hard, or time consuming. After the very beginning when you are often poor and have to micro everything, what I do is: Once every couple-few turns zoom out and pan over your empire. Make sure all the faces are green, and send your mobile homeland security forces after all the new rediculously recurring rebel armies. At the beginning of every turn the first thing you do is go through the construction scroll and order up new buildings for all the settlements that have finished building something. Or, if you like, you can just order up multiple buildings at a time. (assuming you have the money) When there are no more buildings at that city level that you want to build there, wait for the settlement grows info and order up the new government building at that time. Part of the object of this game is the management of the empire, not just the battles.
Oh yeah, the reason it shows the income the way it does is so that noobs and stupid people can execute their populations because they don't know how to keep public order and, in their minds, their settlment stops "losing money".
