No, I don't group them...oh wait you have a point. I normally do group them for easy control reference, guess that is the problem.

This doesnt just happen with ellephants.. Its annoying though.

i dont find elepahants terribly use ful. no matter what they always seem to go all scaredand then kill my guys. is there any way to make them work better. also i had an idea. elephants with spear men in them

Remember they are shock troops, and animals at that-they will freak out in prolonged combat. Use them for quick strikes to disrupt enemies or as a major moral damage.

When playing as the Selecuids I found Cataphracts to be far more useful than Elephants. A group of five Cataphracts can wipe out a fullstack roman legion on their own! And they don't run away from fire arrows...

i hate elephants. when i use them they route and die to qiuckly. and against them they are just the oppisite ussualy. one time i was playing in a campaign with the selecudes and i had 3 elephant units in my army. the AI attacked with 1 MERC camel archer and routed 2 of the elephant units.. and the last one was bluffed into fear by a reforming nube spear
