My precious radeon 9800 pro overheated and burnt while playing half-life 2

I am without a gaming pc for a while now.

so as little as I've been online recently, I'll be online even less for a bit.

This has been a very frustrating day, as you can imagine

It burnt? What were you doing?

If I were to guess, he overclocked it (or his CPU, or both) without increasing his cooling accordingly. I've never heard of a graphics card burning out on its own if it hasn't been tampered with. Expensive lesson in PC hardware I would say

i've never heard of a vid card burning out from overclocking

Today's cards are sensitive to overheating if you accidentally unseat the heatsink during installation as well.

1. Why should be care?
2. Assuming that we do, this is still the wrong forum.

I didn't overclock it, i forgot to set up 1 fan that's normally there after a bit of modification. (not the fan that comes with the card). Yeah it was my own stupid fault, the graphics had been going dodgy but I assumed it was a software fault, so when it went I did bang my head many times against a wall.

You should care because you're nice people, and I was feeling pretty low. I know this is a "rome total war" forum, but it offeres an explanation for why I won't be around online for a while, and yes I should have posted it in the baths or something, but I rarely go there at all. Sorry I didn't follow forum etiquette.

Use it as an excuse to get a new and better graphics card. Quite a shame to lose a card because of carelessness though...

Bummer. But let us know what you replace it with and what improvements you notice.

Heck no. I don't want to spend so much money keep upgrading. I want them to progress slower.

there's some light, it might be reparable on further inspection, since it might only be the power connector. If the memory's fried then it's gone forever.

I was planning a huge system upgrade in the summer, but I can't afford it yet, so if I have to buy a new one i will probably buy the same off ebay second hand to tide me over.
