Select the unit/s which you wish to alter the formation of, then right-click on the battlefield and drag the mouse. A blueprint of the unit's final location should appear and by dragging the mouse in different directions, the shape of the unit and the direction of which they are facing can be altered. Hope this helps.

you can also use "=" and "-"

Ideal depths anyone? For cavalry i prefer 3 deep, to give as wide as front as possible to max out on the charge bonus. Spearmen type infantry for anti-cavalry are deep, if i have heavy infantry up against mostly light infanty, i'll thin them out abit so that they can encircle the enemy units somewhat. Missile skirmishers i keep in the square formation, unless they are behind infantry, in which case long and thin.
