how many people actually try and collect certain types of retinues or just the named retinues like strado or archamidies. I have tried on several occasions to collect named retinues. Only mid game the senate make the family member commit suicide for not taking a providence or blockading a port.I rarely ever follow the senate missions. I even bribe enemy rebels or allied family members to collect named retinues. the most I've ever collected was 12 named retinues. I'm playing julli m/m.

Well, I usually just try to get any retinue I can. If they're bad, I switch them to an old family member who hasn't done anything - in other words I do switch retinues to balance everyhting.

First, I'll get my general annoyance out of the way. A family member only has one retinue, made up of up to eight ancillaries. Maybe I'm just a grammar nazi, but that error really irritates me.

I generally try and match the ancillaries to the task. My main conquering generals will have a Doctor/Physician/Chirugeon (sometimes two of them) to reduce my losses for example. Any military ancillary will do, Military Tribunes, Quartermasters, Turncoats, Mercenary Captains, Veteran Centurions, Veteran Warriors, Masters of Horse, Masters of Archers, Siege Engineers, Drillmasters, Gallopers and Runners are all good to have for a general. Herodas and Cestebius (I think he's the one with the siege engineering bonus) are good ones to have as well.
If a family member is governing a settlement, then there are a different set of good ancillaries, like all types of merchants, agriculturalists and the like.

It's better to follow the Senate missions. You get free stuff (money, units and offices leading to good traits) as well as putting off the time you will be outlawed.
The easiest way to collect ancillaries is to build or capture an Academy. The first one in the game is normally Athens. If I take Athens from the Rebels, then I normally get at least 4 named ancillaries on that turn if the general has enough space.

You can. Get them in the same army or city and drag them from the personal scroll onto the portrait of the general you want to give it to. This also works for agents.
The advantages are huge. Bad ancillaries can make you vulnerable to assassination, sap your troops' morale, decrease your command, management, influence, the trade in your settlement or many other things. Good ancillaries can do the opposite. Careful use of ancillaries can make a good family member a great one, so it's definitely worthwhile.

Also, for cities, it is good to have mercenary captain.
"It's not true. Some have great stories, pretty stories that take place at lakes with boats and friends and noodle salad. Just no one in this car. But, a lot of people, that's their story. Good times, noodle salad. What makes it so hard is not that you had it bad, but that you're that pissed that so many others had it good." Jack Nicholson

Now while I try and collect ancilliaries I also do the same for my agents. For diplomats: Forgien hostage, translator, and rhtorican(if I have a scriptorium)
for spies and assassins: pet monkey, courtisan, skilled courtisan, dancer. (for assasins you can get a pet white cat but I never came across it in the game.) build temples to bacchuss but don't but in a govenor. I usually pick a settlement sort of out of the way like Iuviam north of patavium
