Actually i dont know about this. Sometimes i seems to take heavy losses when doing that.

the casualties are caused by the mass of units, eg phalanx...i think, although i know it is caused by the phalanx that you are charging...

One of my generals charged into the side of the enemy while my pikemen were holding them in place and my general died impaling himself on my own phalanx formation! I've also seen my own cavalry die from my own phalanxes.

Yes, I had that happen a few times, sometimes my falanx isn't even engaged and my general just passes the pikes and DIES. Very frustrating.... I now go to 'standard formation' the very moment my cavalry hit a unit engaging one of my falanxes.
