ok first is it possible to change unit stats like damage health etc. and if so how

sencond of all is it possible to play a campaign mode without the senate telling you what to do?

Yes, you edit export_descr_unit.txt. The modding forum is the best place to ask about that though.

Only if you remove them from the campaign completely.

Hope some one reads this

Would RTW Gold Edition (ie with BI) have any/all official patches. Can't seem to find anything to tell me what version I have.

BI is patch 1.4. I am not sure if the gold pack also include patch 1.6, but you can download it and try.

I'm not sure if you are brand new to RTW, but in case you are at the risk of stating the obvious, if you play a campaign as any non-Roman faction you don't get assigned any Senate missions.

Don't discount the Senate missions though ... a lot of them are a pain, but some of them are actually helpful in developing your game strategy.
