In military treatises and in some historical battles, there were cases where greatly outnumbered troops defeated their enemies when they were forced to fight to the death as they cannot retreat.
Does RTW make use of this fact? For example, purposely placing your unit with their backs facing a river so they cannot retreat, and let the enemy surround the unit.
In Romance of the Three Kingdoms, great Generals leading the surrounded unit can win as "each of their men can take down 10 enemies" when fighting to the death.

They do seem to fight better when fighting to the death, but I've never really tried intentionally placing them in such a situation before, though. However, if you look at the units trapped on walls, they sure take out a lot of the enemy before dying out. Not bad for units that're supposed to be routing, IMO.

Units fighting to the death are not routing, because they have nowhere to run to, this can be useful as it ties up the enemy, (usually multiple units because you are surrounded), for a fair while until every last one of your men is dead. Thusly make sure when doing the same to an enemy, that you leave a way out for their men to flee, otherwise you will find your own units tied down.
