So in Rome: Total War as most of you know, a phalax will smother the legions in thier sleep during a head on charge. And sure, you're saying "well spears would win becasue the legionaries wouldn't be able to get around the spears".
But do you really think the spearmen would kill off all the swordsmen so quickly. I'm thinking that with those 4x3 foot sheild that seem to exist in the game, the legionaries really wouldn't fall so quickly and in such large numbers. How absolutely impossible would it be to block a spear oint wiht those sheild and wiht years of experiance?
So do you think it is realistic that phalanxes squash other soldiers so quickly that you barely have time to get support over to them before they start a routin'?
In Rome:Total Realism does it work the same that the spearmen kill so quickly?
Part II:
I wanna know what is the general consensus (if there is one) on who is the favorite type of melee foot soldier?
Is it the flexible Roman legion with high armour, javelins and speed coming out the ying-yang, or the slow moving, impenitrable phalaxes of the greeks and eastwards? Or do you want to vote for a third party, maybe the barbaric quick, yet poorly defended sheer might of men like the swordsmen adn their chosen counterparts or poorly armoured bastarnea or falxmen?
They are all pretty sweet but which do you prefer? Which do you rely on most heavily and have the most fun using, or who gets you of a jam when you need someone to help out?
For me i'd say i rely on spears becase i can be sure to hold out my center and allow for tactical manoevers. But the legions are funner as you can flank and run around but still rely on them to hold out in a pushing match.
