I prefer playing on M/M or H/H. When the game gets to VH/VH the ai cheats like crazy and I start hating the game instead of enjoying it.
My memory isn't that great anymore since I've been focusing on my studies and all those memories about RTW are leaking out of my mind making room for that and my new RTR memories.
My first harsh lesson that I can remember is that as the Greeks I had started a campaign of conquest in Asia leaving most of my cities in Greece garrisoned with normal hoplites and peasants. Then the Brutii came with 4 full stacks and I had to cancel my campaign against the Pontic and rush back to protect my poorly defended homeland.
Really bloody battles and I lost at least one of them.
Harsh Lesson 1: Always have at least 2 good armies to defend your kingdom from invasion.
My second harsh lesson was as the Carthaginians against the Greeks and Roman families. As Carthage I had conquered all of North Africa. Sicily, and Southern Italy where I destroyed the Brutii. Then for some stupid reason which I can't remember I decided to leave the Julii, Scipii, and SPQR alone and sent most of my forces, which were primarily Iberian infantry, long shield cavalry, and elephants of various types, to invade Greece.
Well when my 3 stacks got there they found 6 or more full Greek stacks many of which were filled with armoured hoplites. I destroyed 4 of them but 2 of those were 'Pyrrhic victories' so I had to leave and retrain my forces. Then a storm hits one of my fleets and I lose a few ships and a good chunk of my surviving forces. Then after that the Julii and Scipii come down on Tarentum and Croton with 3 full stacks each.
Can't remember what happened after, but I think I either quit the campaign or got my ass historically handed to me.
Harsh Lesson 2: Always look before you invade and don't let weakened enemies survive cause they'll recover and attack you at the worst possible time.
