I myself prefer phalanxes to any other infantry unit, greek especially. However my favorite has to be the carthage sacred band.

Calvary i like cataphracts however chariots have proven to take them on 1v1.

Archer, the pharoh's bowmen of Egypt. Hands down.

Seige I like onagers, who doesn't. Heavy onagers are too expensive and take two turns although i wouldn't mind having a few of them lying around.

I think Rome did a good job with balancing MOST of the units. Each seems to have strengths and weaknesses.

Infantry... If you can use Phalanx I'd say Silver Shield Pikemen (Only a lazy / inept human player will lose to the computer using these) Otherwise Urban Cohort

Cavalry: Companion Cavalry

Archer: Forrester - how many archers do you know can fight off cavalry?

Siege: Repeating Balista - Teach those pesky Horse Archers a lesson

infantry: urban cohorts, spartans when fighting animal of any sorts, but urban mostly
cavalry: cmon, it has to be armoured ele's, id like to see any1 match match it with anything else
archer: has to be chosen archers you can basicly use them as infantry to because of they're defence and sword skills
siege: heavy onagers, it maybe expensive but its still the best.

Javelin cavalry can defeat elephants quite easily if used properly. A few volleys of javelins can make elephants run amok.
