I am playing as Britain in RTW on H/H and have captured large parts of Europe as well as parts of Spain. I now have about 30,000 denari coming in per turn so price is not really a concideration if i want to hire mercs.

So my question is which mercs are worth hiring and which would other players not get even if they were free.

My personal preferences are Cretan archers, mercenary hoplites, slingers, and Barbarian cavalry. This is because I usually play Romans and do not have the abaility to make them but I like to use them tactically. Scythian horse archers are also nice, but I hardly use them.

I avoid Eastern Infantry like it had the plague, especially after the last battle I had. It was my 2500 (mainly hastati) versus 2800 Pontic troops (mainly Eastern Infantry). In the end, I had 130 casualties and they had 2798.

I also avoid Bastarnae mercs (too expensive) and Thracian mercs (useless in my style of fighting).

In RTR, my favourites are Cretan Archers, Pezoi (for non-phalangite armies), Bastarnae Mercs and Galatian Swordsmen.

Bastarnae are quite expensive, but they pack a serious punch too. Once they've got some experience and equipment upgrades, they can hack their way through most enemy units. If you have a steady income, they are great additions to your armies.

I just LOVE mercenary hoplites since I'm usually playing as the romans so I can't get them any other way. With them, I can have a very stable center with 3 merc hoplites units. Combined with 2 roman infantry units on each flank of the phalanxes and 3 more in reserve, that provides a very strong and stable battleline.

Merc Hoplites, Cretan Archers, and Horse Archers are golden. Slingers aren't too bad either.

Agreed, Merc Hoplites. I don't play as any of the greek nations, so I love the Hoplites when I can get them. They have almost single-handedly won battles for me.

I used to love cretan archers to, but I don't anymore. They are great in the beginning, but now that I have pantheons to mars I actually prefer archer auxilia. The cretans have 3 more missile attack, but that is balanced by the extra 3 attack that comes from the 3 experience, but that 3 experience give the archer auxilia a total of 3 armour and 6 defense skill compared to the cretans 4 defense skill not counting armour upgrades, plus that archer auxilia can be retrained and cost less.

Mostly what everyone else said.

I'm surprised no-one mentioned it: Mercenary War Elephants.

merc war elephants are expensive and not even as good as regular war elephants.

Bastarnae and Hoplites for me.

Sarmatian cavalry.
Spanish mercenaries.
Illyrian mercenaries.

When possible, I send expeditions to go grab these guys and bring them back to fight.

Sure, but if you are a civ that doesn't get any elephants, then they quite useful.

And you can always mod the price and stats of them.

They are to rare to deserve being mentioned.

In what way are merc war elephants worse than other war elephants? The only difference I can see is that they are green.

I've never seen any merc elephants. I'll have to keep my eyes out for them. Are they only in Africa?

Yes, they exist only on one place in east africa and one place in west africa, and they're VERY unlikely to apear.

In a scippi campain I have 2 units of them. One has travelled up through spain, gaul, britian back down for germany and dacia. They have now landed in aisa minor to fight the egyptins that are there. Have only lost 3 men from the unit in that time. They have participated in virtulay every battle on the way.

Great at braking down the gates to get into the barbarian cities. They have let me move so fast that I am still the gemaral who started the assult in spain.

I use the tactic of assault on the first turn, leave them there for retraing then move on with all the troops and move in the pesant stack thats following.

The whole stack is now on at least one gold cheveron with most being on triple gold. I would say never underestimate the power of these in a non-carthage/selcuia game.

Generaly find them next to tingi.

Sure I once picked up mercenary elephants in the middle east somewhere but my memory could be wrong ?

Like Ar_Kai said, if you're playing a nation that doesn't have elephants, it's great to get your hands on mercenary ones, even if they are expensive... although you soon realise that if you use them badly, you soon need some new mercenary elephants !!!

True, they are in west africa, close to Tingi. Also somewhere around Antioch, Hatra, and Seleucia.

In RTR, my favorite mercanery would be the Indian elephant. The mahouts hurl javelins and the elephants have sweet war paint all over their body. Of course, they're expensive (4,000 denari) and they only come from around India.

Pezoi are awesome mercenaries because they have very long spears and they are pretty common.

Also, remember that Thracian mercanaries should be used against phalanx formations. They chop phalanxes up to bits.

for the indian ele's (in RTR) I don't find the recruitment cost the problem, more the upkeep.
