So, with battle difficulty, it affects computer morale, not the units' actual strength? So it's not as if you're fighting an opponent and their units have modified stats (like attack and defense), it's just making them less likely to rout and more intent on winning?

I don't know if the patch fixed this, but a harder battle rating means not only you, but the AI army has lower morale. So, your men rout easier as well as the computers. This has the effect of making battles go faster, as units are more likely to run sooner. I actually prefer normal difficulty on battles. This ensures that the battle will last longer, as men don't run away, they slay each other.
