EoJ..^thats a classic !
A long missile bombardment by mercenary troops. Then the Greeks send in a phalanx rush on a broad front to engage a disorganised Seleucid column in the flank. Greek phalanx switch to phalanx formation immediately after this screen shot.
It was a one sided outcome

This just happened in a night battle today. A Spartan Phalangite risks his neck while fighting a Thracian Hoplite.

SubRosa is that a custom battle or did you wait 90 turns to get those three Spartan Royal Guard units?
Also, I have the same setup as you with XGM and bows of Artemis, does your game ever crash before going into a battle?

That is a campaign battle Gaius. I almost never do custom battles. But those are not Spartan Royal Guard units. They are Spartan Phalangites. You can start recruiting them in Sparta once you build an Army Barracks. Sexy boys are they not?
They are a little better than Armored Phalangites, but not as good as the Spartan Royal Guard. As the name implies they fight in a phalanx, using a pike, rather than the over-arm fighting style of hoplites such as the Royal Guard.
However, I did wait 30 turns to build an extra Spartan Royal Guard unit too. That one I started out with was so impressive that I wanted another one. By the time I started building it I had enough other cities pumping out pikemen that I did not really miss Sparta not producing units every turn. It was well worth it too.
Hey, so you are another Artemisian fan? Those girls are amazing! Well worth every drachma (or is it sesterces that RTW uses?). I too have the problem of the game crashing to the desktop sometimes when loading a battle. It is because of the bowwomen. I am guessing there is a problem somewhere in the model or skin, but what it could be, I have no idea. It happens when I use them in vanilla RTW as well, so it is not an XGM bug. I just quicksave before every battle, so when it does crash I do not lose anything.
Have you had to fight against them much? I tell you, it is a scary thing to see an enemy army with four of them. The Seleucids seem to love building them in my current campaign. Even charging heavy cavalry into them is a chancy thing, and painful. On the other hand, when they run out of ammo they make excellent reserves. More than once throwing them into melee has been the only thing that has held my line against a superiour foe.

What are Spartan Royal Guard? Are they from a mod or something?

Yes, they show up in the Extended Greek Mod.
SubRosa, the Artemis girls are truly amazing. Playing as the Greeks, a single unit of Bows held the walls of Pergamum against 4 Independent Greek and 2 Seleucid armies who really wanted it. One time while going melee against a ladder spearmen unit, my bows slaughtered it, then proceeded down the ladders and routed a pike phalanx. Those girls held the walls well, until my other forces were too depleted from lack of retraining (I was literally seiged every turn for 6 turns) and the city fell.
My Macedonian Bows in another campaign, were responsible for routing half of a Roman army that was twice my size.
I have yet to fight the Bows, but Im sure it will be a moment to put on my brown pants.
Im new to the XGM/Bows mod, in fact it was this thread that made me try it out.

@Captain Flynn: The Spartan Royal Guard are one of many new units in the Extended Greek Mod. It is a mod that uses the Mundus Magnus map, and adds a pile of new units, mostly to the Hellenic factions, but to others as well. Plus a few other things. You can see a brief recap of the new units and pics of them here.
The Greek Cities start with one unit of Spartan Royal Guard. It takes 30 turns to build another one (the idea is they are supposed to be rare). Thankfully though, you can retrain them right from the start of the game, unlike the one Spartan Hoplite unit the Greeks start with in vanilla RTW. They are most uber, and I love how they look in the bronze armor.
@GaiusOctavius: The Artemisians are definitely my favorite unit in RTW. Sometimes I feel guilty that they are so powerful. But then again they are quite expensive, and other factions do have some uber archers who can go into melee as well. What I think balances it out however is that if you are playing as a faction who can recruit them, it means your neighbors can too.
I fought one battle against the Seleucids that sounds like the one with your Macedonians against the Romans. My army literally never got to blows with the Seleucids. The Bows of Artemis made the entire army retreat (well, maybe seeing the second army of reinforcements entering the map behind my main army had something to do with that as well... ) That as with only two bow units, one with a gold experience chevron and the other 3 silver. They are really scary when they get that experienced.
I am glad to hear I infected... erm, inspired someone else with the urge to try the Bows and XGM. I have had a ton of fun with them both. But after 3 months I am getting tired of playing Greeks, so tonight I started a new campaign as the Scythians. That should be quite different. I am even thinking of seeing if I can make the rebel amazon chariots recruitable. That would be neat.
Edit: Just added the charioteers. Now all I have to do is add unit cards. My test cards worked, but I think I want something other than Deedlit from Lodoss War for the permanent pics. I think I tomorrow I will try a rebel campaign and see if I can get a screen cap of the unit cards there. Or maybe tomorrow at work I will see if there is something interesting online.
