there is also a rumor that there were many "other" gospels, but a greek who compiled the bible only used the ones that claimed he rose from the dead.

What about the time Christ disappeared for 20 some years. There are many theories, which you might agree with depending on how religious you are, that say he traveled the world laying the seeds of his faith. The apostles tried to form the official Christian church, i.e pass on the teachings of Christ. For example, the Armenian Apostolic Church was formed by the two apostles Bartholemiu and Tadeius, who traveled to Armenia and were killed as most apostles were. This is why our church is called Apostolic in their honor. Also, to say that Christ was minor and the work was done by the apostles is a little like saying the engine of a car is minor, and the work is done by the engine compartment. Christ opened our (Christian's) eyes to new ways of worship and faith through his teachings, but especially through his actions and sacrifice.
