So anyways, I'm playing as Scythia, and I hate where they started. So, I build a decent sized army, and march them with a goal in mind: Salona.
So I take Salona form the gual, smack a few of their armies around, then fend off Brutii back to Apollonia, and I take that city too. A turn or so later, I'm approached by a Gallic Diplomat.
He DEMANDED that I be under Gaul's protection, they I become allies with him, give and receive military access, and grant trade rights.
I...huh...who...what?
Why would the Gaul, whom I've thoroughly smacked around and thrown out of their own regions, want to protect me all of a sudden? Maybe I left an impression, maybe they just aren't too smart.. but what I'm betting on, is there's something about being a Protectorate I don't know about. Any suggestions on what may be going through the Gallic minds?

Get out of it now. Dont be a protectorate ever, those smelly Gauls get free reign of your territory AND most of your income in tribute. Slaughter them all and take their lands, women, and gold. Parthians are too cool to be anyones glorified slaves.

As usual, noble Spiral Who Is Touched by the Gods, the garlic-eaters of Gaul have forgotten that their wine is more potent than mead and have collapsed in drunken stupor and in their rantings, dispatched the addled diplomat who made such silly remarks.
Ignore them. Their breath reeks of garlic and their minds are twisted.
As one gallant warlord to another, would you verily give over the gold and silver for which you have fought so hard, merely to receive a promise from garlic-eating, wine-drinking Gauls that they shall protect you?!? From what?
Remove from them the burden of governing their lands. It is obviously too much for their feeble minds to grasp. Then they shall cease such foolishness and the only problems your warriors will have from them is in determining which of their wenches shall grace your beddings that night.

Ha, Terikel is by far my favourite Warlord ever. But I see the wisdom in your words. Then it is decided. I shall deny them the pleasure of my earnings, and take from them what they value most.
Thank you for your wisdom. I now have an empire to crush.

I have a question if that's ok. If you become a protectorate of another faction, and that faction is destroyed, will you become free? Or will that faction live on as your faction?

It seems that protectors seldom, if ever, do anything whatsoever to support/provide military assistance to their protectorates
