How about a combination of both? Thats what I used to do as the Seleucids.

LEGIONARIES for sure. I used to use pikes on the flanks but the legionaries are far more flexible.
I have read bits of that article Gaius and it lead me to test armies with just SSL's. I had fairly good success with that army so it works for me. The only positive for pikes is perhaps that the enemy may 'fear' charging home onto pikes more than the legions. But aggressive use of your infantry and cav (companions) can help you come out on top.

Phalanxes are pretty bad in general. Always go with the Legionaries, they are by far more flexible and if you stand them still with defensive mode on, you get the same stopping power as a phalanx (maybe take a few more casualties in a cav charge), their ability to throw pila involves the entire unit and can be deadly to an enemy, plus you can break them from formation and swarm all over enemies.
Phalanxes are boring to.

Phalanxes kick major ass when defending. Honestly. They can defend entire cities with one or two. Of course, this is often not, but they still kick ass. I can understand people hating them for offense, but not really when it comes to defense.

I just use both, its nice to have a mixture of troop types
and if you fight romans using a cheap look-a-like copy won't get you very far, unless the other general sucks (a.k.a. computer).
