i played as scippii, and defeated a small carthaginian army on sicily, and afterwards, it shown as a famous battle, but when i invaded carthage and had a rather large showdown with the carthaginian faction leader, it wasnt a famous battle...

the first time i "spotted" a famous battle i actually thought: "hey, i just made a heroic victory against the rebels there!" so it's just a place where YOU made a heroic victory

That's about the size of it. When I was playing my current Brutii campaign in RTW 1.5, I got the famous battle marker because my fresh young general from Apollonia faced down a Greek faction heir who had escaped being killed along with his brother in defending Thermon some five or ten turns earlier. The Greek general must've gained a command star or two in spite of routing, but he finally got himself caught in a hastati-Samnite wrap and cut down before he could hop out of there.
