I've been having a HUGE problem with my generals falling in battle since I downloaded this new mod. In RTR my general wouldn't die unless they were one of the very last people left in the unit, however, in RTR my generals are always among the first. For example, I've been leading an army brigade led by a tribunal of Generals who all recently came of age and needed battle experience before settling down to a life of politics. Anyways, with my Carthaginian campaign, I sent my three generals along to take out the enemies single general and two out of my three generals died within the first 20 seconds of combat with a single unit! In that battle I lost only 7 men out of 1070 soldiers and 2 out of the seven were my generals. Then the next turn I take my remaining general (and faction heir) with 2 units of merc cavalry and the VERY FIRST person to die in that battle was my last general. This problem is extremely infuriating and I don't understand why there is such a great difference in the Generals defense between RTR and RTW. The worst thing about my last general dieing was that he didn't even attack head on! He actually came from the back left side and still died the second he made contact with the enemy! THIS SUCKS SO MUCH because it's causing me to lose most of my western territories!

I only use cavalry to eliminate stray units trying to attack my archers. I usually just position them behind the enemy unit and attack from the rear.

Yeah...I agree with the others. Your General is your most powerful cavalry unit (excluding heavy cavalry for some factions) but they are not immortal. One thing I have found is that if you rely on them too much to win battles, bad things will happen. Use them wisely. If anything, use them as a final crushing blow to a unit already engaged - not as a glorious first charge. Until they get some experience killing worthless rebels you need to take care of them.

I'm not a noob... this is actually my third campaign (2 with RTW and this is my first RTRPE). Also, it's not the unit that is dieing, it's just the general. I attack with hoplites in the front and send in my general to hit them in the back and cause a rally by the enemy, but for some reason as soon as I hit the enemy from behind, my general somehow dies. In none of the battles did I lose more than three men from my general's unit. It's not that I'm sending my general's unit into a suicide mission, it's just that my general's keep dieing in victories where I'm only losing 7-20 men out of a 1200 person army. In fact, the most men I've lost in a single battle so far is 200 because Carthage and their elephants are awesome.... it's just their generals that suck.

Use the rally command when you launch your charge. Your general will stop and blow the horn, placing him at the back of the charge. At least this works on vanilla RTW.
