Greetings PurpleCobra. I can't promise exact, specific, step-by-step instructions, but I will provide what aid I can.
First, the instructions at RTR's official website say you need to install a fresh copy of Rome: Total War (hereafter referred to as Vanilla). I followed all of these instructions and run RTR 6.2, which is currently outdated. A somewhat simpler fix for you is to download the "platinum edition," which can be found here, on filefront.
This "platinum edition" is, I believe, the only one which will work if you have the gold edition of RTW (that is, Vanilla, along with Barbarian Invasion).
The instructions included at the Filefront page are outdated; they were written before the gold edition of RTW was released, which is automatically patched to version 1.5. Therefore, as far as I know, you need only download the platinum edition at filefront. You should probably install RTR on a second copy of RTW, the process for installing a second copy of RTW can be found explained beautifully, by our own SubRosa, here. It is reasonably easy to follow, and I can probably talk you through doing it for Vista, if that's what you have.
The information about versions may be completely wrong, but I believe I got it right. If anyone knows for sure how do install RTR platinum, feel free to correct what I've written here.
I hope I've been able to help you Purple Cobra, and I think you've made a good choice - RTR is an excellent mod. Let us know how it goes.

If you have installed the mod-switch, you wouldn't need to do anything else. Just click on the shortcuts RTRPE, or RTRPE-BI which adds some BI features.

It isn't necessary to install BI again, and it will only take up valuable computer space if you do so.
