I know the quickest way to gain experience (other than taking advantage of rebels with your spies and assassins) with diplomats? It feels like a paradox because you need successful deliberations to gain experience, but if your diplomat is already weak, it's hard to get enough successful encounters to gain skill. This makes the early parts of campaigns difficult because my diplomats are good for little more than trade agreements. I have to wait until I build up my cities before I can really initiate many bribes, treaties, and protectorate agreements.

I've gotten two, the most recent of which was early in a Macedon XGM campaign. I wonder if your progress has anything to do with the likelihood of foreign cultures accepting a protectorate status because foreign rulers seem more defiant of my influence as I gain more and more power.

Ach, so it is scribbled, so shall it be.
We thank thee, Divine Knight Lord Hussar, for thy efforts of spreading our enlightened wisdom to those who yet lack the experience to pierce our veil of runes to see for themselves the counsel beneath.
And we lift a horn of ale to thee, Noble and Wise Andalus, for pointing out this fact to weary eyes. Verily, we have not noticed, but once thou has mentioned it, we do recall seeing the Noble Knight Lord doing this often, and often with runes explaining from where the counsel germinated.

I've found that offering just a trade agreement first will almost always be agreed with.
Then, before I close the dialogue box I offer to sell my map for a small-ish sum (generally around 1000).
I've found that this combination helps buffer my diplomats, but really all i use them for is trade rights and a boost of income early on.

Will giving diplomats experience in export_descr_unit give them extra influence when trained?
