Welcome to TWH, alecray.
mods
A mod is a modification. It changes the game files to the game. This can range from making a single new unit, to total conversion mods like Fourth Age: Total War (An LOTR mod). Some mods will completely overwrite the vanilla (original) files, but most can be installed without affected your normal copy.
and patches like 1.5
A patch is an officially released pack which can be downloaded and installed. These fix many bugs and glitches in the game. You can see which version you have by viewing the game options menu. You must install patches in certain order: 1.2, 1.3, 1.5,
and stuff
What stuff?

alecray: It might be a good idea to take a look at the Newbie FAQ and Terikel's Scroll of Wisdom before starting a new thread in the future. Those threads answer many of the most commonly asked questions about the game, and this question is one of them.
Since you've joined the forums you have posted a few new topics. This in itself is not bad, but your topics were all rather unneeded. For example this thread wasn't needed because your question is already answered in the FAQ.
It is best to only post a new thread when you really have to. Simple questions can go in Terikel's FAQ thread, where someone will come and answer them for you. I'd like to emphasize that you're most welcome to posts in this forums, but please try to cut down on the amount of new topics you post.
I'm now closing this thread as it is unneeded and to prevent it turning into a discussion about your posting. If you have any further questions don't hesitate to contact me or another moderator via email.
