I believe the general's attack/defense bonus only applies to his bodyguard unit - not all units in his army.
Try right-clicking on any "other" unit in the army while they are in the field, with or without a general. The 1/2 screen detailed description of the unit pops up & you see their stats don't change.
Nonetheless, your generals with more offense/defense (from additional command stars) can "safely" spend more time in the thick of the battle & still likely survive to tell the tale.
Young faction members can have negative command traits. If they have no counter-balancing positive traits, then, yeah, he's negative. Send him to some easy fights to get positive traits (or maybe make him a professional governor who never fights).

Therefore, would having two generals in one army be a good idea, because you can rotate generals through, and when the one 10-star geberal dies, you can get a 5-star general as his replacement.

No, a good general certainly makes a world of difference. In my current Gaul campaign I've got a 10 star general, and with a unt of warband attacking ANYTHING, with this guy behind them, they will carry on until there's about 10 of them left befrore they even think about running. Now, if i did the same for that warband unit without him there, they'd run from peasants, I'm telling you. I think it certainly effects moral, but the attacking effect is hard to calculate, because my units still take some nasty casualties, but the difference is they will carry on fighting a lot longer than their foes, which more often than not earns you a victory.
Also, does anyone know how much of a difference blowing the horn makes? I tend to use it whenever I can, especailly just as my army and the enemy engage. I don't know if this does effect the fighting very much?

The horn is the Rally button. It will raise the morale of routing units to bring them back under your control. Sometimes, though, they are too far gone, or enemies are too close, for them to be rallied.

Tip: Before charging your general into a stack of units from anywhere, use the horn. He'll wait a second behind and let the rest go on so that he doesn't risk being killed in the initial impact.

I've been using that very effectively of late, Pandar. My Gallic leader has used it since he was 16!! Although, now days, as he's hit 50 and perhaps as he thinks he's gonna go soon, he might as well get stuck in, because just yesterday I was fighting Britain to take Lugdunum, and my army was going to win, it was larger and more experience than the British, but I almost lost my leader in that battle! I took my eyes of him for 5 seconds and next minute he was in a unit of about 100 spears trying to take them on alone!! I pulled him back, and had to divert my attention back to my other cavalry, who were having some trouble doing their simple job, and when I came back, he was in the fray again!! He started the battle with 41 bodygaurds, and ended with 5!! He killed about 300 people though, and got 2 chevrons for his trouble. Nutter...

Yeah, best battle I ever had was using that very same technique.
1 Gallic General, I can't even remember who he was now, shame, it could only have been about 3 weeks ago, but the battle was like this:
1 Gallic general, with 24 bodygaurds, with back up of an army of 1700 approx of various units
vs
an army of Britons with 1600 individuals, prodominently warband with 1 or 2 swordsmen and 1 general with about 3o odd chariots.
The battle started, and despite me waiting the maximum of 3 times, my back up hadn't arrived. No battle time limit. Oops... So, 24 horses verses 1600 men and 30 heavy chariots...
I won that battle losing about 100 men, the British lost 1550 men, including their general. The back up arrived after about 15 minutes, by which time I'd circled the enemy , waited for the massive army to rotate, to face me, in the process of them doing so I'd move again, and because I was on horse, by the time they'd turned to face me in their giganum line, I'd caught my breath and was fresh, as aposed to the poor warband units, especially the ones who were on the edges, and were exhausted after about 5 minutes. It was a simple case of getting behind them and running into them, blowing the horn so that the general holds back for about 1 seconds to ensure he doesn't die a rather painful death, and when they scatter kill as many as you can before the other units have a chance to catch ya. Half of their army was dead by the time my wandering back up arrived. And it only ended as a clear victory!! If my back up had not arrived then I might have won with the general alone, although the chariots would have been troublesome.

Are you sure that's not only if you control all of the units, which with two large armies quite often exceeds the limit of units allowed on the battle field of 18, or is it 20? I've had battles before where me and the enemy have large armies, and also large armeis to back up the first army, and if I tell the game I want to control just one army, the I will, and the reinforcements will still randomly turn up whether or not I wait. And if I tell the game I want to control both of the armies, which is a total, of, say, 25 units, then if they both turn up at the beginning of the battle, I control the two armies, except there will be a few units unable to enter the battle, which are randomly selected. (one battle had 2 units of Beserkers the game randomly selected to be left out, which was very annoying). Those units can only enter the battle if another unit leaves the battlefield or is completely destroyed. I've even had to send units out of the btlle just so the better ones can enter before.
I hope that's clear. Is it just me who has this problem?
