Yeah. Its weird about XGM that AI manages to recruit full stacks within one turn when attacked.
What kind of troops do you have and how many..?
Though your info. is kind of incomplete to help you out completely, here you go..
Since you are Greek, attacking Rome's walls through seige-towers and ladders won't be helpful.
My guess is that you have Hoplites and Phalanx troops in your army which suck at combat on walls.
Use Sap-Points/Onagers to take down walls an defend those entry-points into the city with your Hoplite/Phalanx troops. That is how you will be able to fight on your Army's strength.
And , don't allow yourself to be Flanked from the gates. Use Cavalry, if you have any, to defend flanks. Don't get close to the towers. Towers in XGM can wipe out your entire unit within seconds.
