I've lost count of how many times I've had to face two or even three stacks of enemy armies alone because my reinforcements don't show up. After beating that scenario a few times you feel pretty invincible, and you look upon the rag tag little squadrons of the few men left in your army after wards with reverence and respect. After the carnage I have them form a line while watching the enemy melt away. Discipline to the end! I know, "oh brother", but I guess it's the closest to that kind of courage many of us would ever see in real life. Too bad the game doesn't have provisions for Triumphs through the Roman streets when you do win victories like that. Would really make the experience cool although winning standards make up for it a bit.

I've given up relying on reinforcements, period. Instead, I move my armies into places where only one or two enemy armies can hit at once, and take steps to lure them into attacking me by weakening my army until they'll make their move. If I have no choice but to attack, I'll hit the strongest possible combination of enemy units, so they have the advantage and will counter-attack, then I'll arrange my forces for a defensive fight.
Worse comes to worse, I can generally hold up long enough to butcher some of their generals. With any luck, I can then use nearby armies to attack the weakened stacks.
