Usually the higher defense/armor units get more advantage on higher scale as greater numbers mean their higher defense stats overall decrease % of losses. In small unit for example a charge and warcry by Gauls might kill very quick 5-6 legionaries which is pretty high % of the unit While in Huge size even if the same attack kills 2x as many its a lower % of the unit. This is mostly due to the pathfinding and map sizes. Its especially obvious in sieges and ambushes.
Huge size also can affect populations if you playing small faction as recruiting 2 units can drop a 2,000 town by 25% which even with 5% growth takes 8-10 turns to recover from without slaves. Whereas even large scale 2 units is much less and you hardly ever feel the population impact of recruiting.

On the other hand, on huge scale, recruitment allows for population redistribution more quickly through recruitment.
