I was just wondering what people think of ambushes. Do you make them often?
I hardly ever do them, actually, I only have once and that was by accident. I prefer using them units to actually go and take a city or something usefull.

I just use them to hold strategic positions when I don't have the right troops for fort defense.
Like defending the south side of the Italian Alps with all cavalry or all archers.

It depends who you are playing as, because some factions don't have the sort of troops that particularly benefit from pulling off an ambush. I only ever bother with them, and with these I do them as often as possible, as the Britons and Gauls. German spearwarbands are a lot easier to beat if you charge them from both sides while they're in column formation. And it helps against the Romans too, particularly in the early game when you can't expect your warbands to do particularly well against Hastati. An ambush and mad charge around all sides of one end of the column will cause an quick rout of multiple units in that area. This can be devastating as those untouched further along the column will have their morale shaken, and you can proceed to roll up the whole column like an enormous human carpet.
