Having been away from RTW for about 18 months, I have just got back into it but found the old map a bit too predictable as I know it too well. So I downloaded Mundus Magnus 3 and I really can't see myself going back to Vanilla as that huge huge map is simply superb. Does anyone else favour it?
I've had to heavily modify it to suit my style. V3 comes with the most ridiculously heavily garrisoned and experienced rebel settlements. I've got rid of all that and they're now at the standard of Vanilla, so factions gobble up these settlements pretty quickly. I've given the Britons, Thrace and Dacia two starting cities rather than one, and took the Germans out of Sweden so that all have a good chance of mainland expansion. Also I've got rid of units that I think are silly - no more shrieking women, head hurlers, numidian, seleucid and armenian legionaries, urban cohorts, gladiators, arcani, legionary and praetorian cavalry, and praetorian cohorts can only be recruited in Rome.
Public order over such a vast map is an issue. So I've also given governor's house and city walls 5% law bonuses per improvement. It should be properly playable now.
So far it's looking good. And I want to take over the whole map just to see how unplayable it is when you control so many cities and you forget about rebels, public order problems and that full stack of enemies which is about to burst into an unprotected country.
