Ace and I just played a killer game. He was the Selucid Empire and I was Germania. I attempted a German Scare Square, but it was rather shoddy as I've only skimmed the strategy document.
So the game started and I had my scare square, and Ace had his Cataphracts, elephants, legionaries, chariots, and pikemen. I started to charge towards me, at which point I brought my archers forward and started firing (did little). His Cataphracts broke off and started heading to my right, where i had a couple cavalry placed. I charged my cavalry towards him, but unfortunately he turned and headed towards my square. He hit my spearmen head on, and then withdrew after a few losses. He then destroyed my cavalry on that side
On the other side of the map, his elephants and chariots duked it out with my other two cavalry, which were easily defeated. I then took my archers, which had gotten a fair deal out, and fired flaming arrows at the elephants to get them to route, which was fortunately successful. I'm assuming my cavalry took care of the chariots, as I never saw them again.
Back to Ace's cataphracts, the spearmen on that side of my square began to chase them, effectively ruining the square. My spearmen started to head towards his cataphracts, which were currently slaughtering my general. I also sent all my screeching women over as well. All in all they were somewhat effective, as they got rid of a fair bit of cataphracts, but were shortly after killed.
Back to the other side of the square, A_C's spearmen were marching toward mine, who were still in the formation they'd been in since the beginning. Once they got near enough, It was quite an even battle. In the end, my spearmen were for the most part victorious there. Unfortunately, he still had legionaries and cataphracts. My spearmen began to engage the legionaries and for the most part wiped them out. About 20 were remaining afterwards. Then Ace brought his cataphracts down upon my spearmen, and silenced them in one swift stroke.
At this point, everything I had was defeated, save for two archer units. They had been chased by a group of spearmen to the other end of the map, which they had slowly defeated by skirmishing. I brought them to where Ace's units were, and they were almost immediately defeated. Battle over.
Throughout the entire game, none of my men routed. They all fought to the death. It was quite interesting to see how effective an army is when they don't run away
