Greetings, fellow commanders.

I've been an fan of RTW since I discovered it a few years ago and I just recently decided to install Barbarian Invasion. I started a campaign as the Huns thinking to best learn the ropes of BI, which went very poorly (I wasn't making any money and was getting attacked too much, even after settling). This was on VH campaign difficulty/Hard battle difficlty, since that's what I've played most of my vanilla RTW games on, and I get bored without a challenge.

I realized the barbarian horde wasn't really my style anyways so I started a new campaign on Hard/Hard with the Eastern Romans, thinking that playing on Hard might be smart for the first campaign, just so I can get my bearings with the new features.

However, I'm starting to worry that the Romans on Hard campaign difficulty isn't actually going to be that challenging in the long run. I'm about 8 turns in. The game is going very well; I'm making a lot of money (best ports/roads everywhere) and I have not even come close to being attacked beyond what I am able. I'm currently invading the Sassanid Empire and their efforts to resist me have been lackluster thus far. And the "new features" (religion) don't seem that complicated after all.

So if some more experienced BI players could give me a feel for whether the easy times now are just a lull before the storm, or if it will indeed be smooth sailing without much challenge the whole way through, I would appreciate that. To give an idea of my skill, here's a rough listing of the vanilla RTW campaigns I've done and the campaign difficulty levels I used for them. My battle difficulty is always on Hard for campaigns.

Julii long campaign: normal difficulty (got boring about halfway through)
Egyptian short campaign: Hard or VH (forget which)
Carthiginian short campaign: VH
Gaul short campaign: Hard or VH
Seleucid short campaign: VH

I really don't want to play for 20 turns and realize it's not going to be challenging enough, but I also don't want to restart the game on VH and have to play through it again (and then maybe find it's actually too hard 30 turns in or w/e).

Thanks!

I've personally never played BI; however, it seems to me that you're very much a short game player. If you start out with good economy and good troops, it may turn out that you don't get a serious challenge in a short campaign for the Eastern Romans. I'll let someone who's actually played the game give you a more informed answer though .

There is no short campaign option in BI. The number of territories (and which particular territories) is different for each faction. Eastern Romans need 34 territories, and territories are generally larger than they were in vanilla, so it looks like it'll be a pretty long campaign (which I'm game for, I haven't done that in a while).

i) It makes sense to start on standard difficulty for the first game, to understand the balance and the new concept
ii) Huns is an easy faction, if one has understood the settle timing and the general barbarian issues.
iii) Eastern rome is IMHO by far the easiest faction

Play western rome, so you get an idea what the game is about!

About your hard/VH and getting bored issues:
You should understand the game and play a complete campaign first.
