When I have unpacked Medieval 2, it does not let me play the Kingdoms expansion. I want to unpack to change units and add new ones etc but I cant without killing my kingdoms.

Did you delete the files you need to delete after unpacking?
http://medieval2.heavengames.com/m2tw/mod_portal/tutorials/using_unpacker/index.shtml
Quoted from Unpacker Readme: NOTE: Due to a timestamp check, the following unpacked files will cause the game to crash and must be deleted before the game is launched:

data\descr_geography_new.txt
data\descr_geography_new.db

They are not kidding. Delete them. If you don't, you will get an unspecified error every time you go into a battle and CTD.
