The mechanics might be interesting. If you are a democracy, a pool of talent would have varying levels of influence. In the early US, influence was as frequently earned on the battlefield (Washington, Jackson, Polk, etc.) as elsewhere. There would be inherent instability in leadership as presidencies are short lived. Political fortunes would also be short lived, so your family tree could be replaced by a table of influence, presidents at the top, followed by governors and senator and then representatives.
In a monarchy, there would be NO choice in who the successor is (unless you assassinate your own sons).
I wonder how they'd determine that a democracy had failed and would be ready for dictatorship.
