Another one folks!

This time Gamespot has conducted an interview with Kieran Bridgen, Creative Assembly's studio communications manager. As before some information is new, some is not. I only quoted and commented on the most interesting parts of the article, there was more to be found in it. Read it for yourselves and offer some opinions or maybe just unintelligible rants of excitement and anticipation. While you go ahead and read this, I'm off to tide my hunger with Medieval II musket-only epic battles!

The most interesting part of the interview is certainly details regarding the new 'Prestige' system that is appearing in Empires. I quote;
"Players will earn prestige as an empire through the growth of their economy, the size and proficiency of their military, the territory they own, and their scientific advancements and achievements. Any combination of these elements can give a player a high score, meaning there are a huge variety of ways to win the game."
To me it sounds like it'll work in the same sort of way as the old Age of Kings scoring system - where you can win a game by scoring high - earning points for kills, research, buildings and so forth with a dash of the 'reputation' aspect from Medieval II added to the mix. Although undoubtedly it'll be more complex than that. Seems to me Kieran is avoiding saying your reputation alone will win the game for you, note he doesn't specifically say a high score = win. Surely you can't win a campaign game through diplomacy, tact, trade and reputation?

Kieran adds a little more to the topic;
"If you wish to be a peaceable nation, expanding through negotiations or growing your economy with trade, the choice is yours."
Next up is more information about the naval warfare and the role of a navy on the campaign etc. Stuff that I won't bother with here because by now we should all be very educated about the Naval Combat. Check out the full article for more on this.

One sentence stood out to me, and in my mind seems to sum up exactly the way the battles have changed;
"The movement and positioning of troops is key to a player's victories now--it's no longer just a matter of knowing when to commit."
Exciting stuff, although undoubtedly there are still melee units and so knowing when to commit will be just as vital in that respect.

Lastly, a little bit of information regarding the role famous characters will play!
"Many famous individuals of the time are represented, either as generals, gentlemen, admirals, or even politicians. These figures each have unique traits and certain preferred tactics. What faction they're born into and how well they progress is, naturally, up to you... "
Interesting, can we determin which faction the characters are born into? Say for example if Great Britain quickly conquers and eliminates France. Will Napolean be born into their faction, but be located in the French territory where he would naturally appear?

One final note, many were concerned last time about the USA after I posted a botched speculative list of playable factions. The article has a screenshot of some US solders battling it out against some unknown foe.

The full article can be found on Gamespot here.

Perhaps the prestige will be like a campaign option like in MTW's two options?

...if this game is everything its made up to be itl be the must-have game of the year, i really hope that all this stuff works out, when i reading it sorta seems like micromanaging could get tedious but if the devs can pull it off i am going to build an alter to CA in my room...

I have to agree with Afty's interpretation of prestige. Though I imagine it more as a score victory in 2050 on Civ.

An excellent idea. I might do that. Yes, Tila Tequila, that means you can move your little area over into the corner, Penelope Cruz will have to do over near the door, and frankly Bai Ling is for the fire.

Or they could go the MTW1 rout, and allow hostile, influential personages to be born into your "conquered" lands with HOLYCRAP FIVE STACKS OF TWEVLE GZZOTHIC KINEGHITS!!!!

Prestige was already around in strategy games like Crusader Kings and the Europa Universalis series. If CA is copying anyone, it definitely isn't CoD4.
