It seems that PCG US has released their version of the Medieval 2 demo early and that it has found its way illegally onto various bit-torrents.

Playing the legal copy from PCG is allowed, but downloading it before it is available from the official site is illegal.

Discussion of the demo will be allowed at the moment (although that may change), although any discussion about downloading it before it is officially released will be cause for a ban.

Quoted from The Forum Code of Conduct:

"Piracy" is the illegal copying and/or distribution of copyrighted content including, but not limited to, games, software, music, movies, pictures, ROMs, abandon-ware, and leaked software. "Cracks" are programs that disable copy-protection technology; "Multiplayer Hacks" are any programs, patches, files, modifications or information exposure cheats that allow a player to gain an unfair advantage over other human opponents in a multiplayer game; a "Key" is a combination of numbers and letters that is required for software installation and sometimes used to validate users for online play; and "Key-Generators" are programs that generate valid Keys.

You may not encourage, discuss, link to, or post in support of activities, methods, and/or techniques involving piracy, cracks, multiplayer hacks, keys and key-generators. In addition, the following are grounds for moderator action on your post and/or account:

* Seeking help to create cracks, multiplayer hacks and key-generators
* Seeking missing files that are supplied with installation CD(s)
* Admitting to possess pirated materials, cracks, multiplayer hacks and key-generators
* Admitting to distribute pirated materials, cracks, multiplayer hacks, keys and key-generators
* Admitting to the use of cracks, multiplayer hacks and key-generators
* Uploading any such files to HeavenGames sites

Generally breaking this rule will result in an instant permanent ban. However you may be given a warning for a first offence if, in our opinion, you are a new forumer who doesn’t understand why this is such a strict rule – this will be explained to you; any subsequent offences will result in a permanent ban.

Please keep discussion of the demo in this thread only until the official release.

Update: Downloading the demo from a torrent is still illegal, but downloading it from an official source (such as this one is not.

Another update:
Clarification on SSE2: It is only required for the demo.

@ Aussie lord, do you have SSE2, 'cos It's requiered to play the game. SSE2 is In most pentiums (could be all but i'm not sure) but the older AMD's don't have It.

Damn... too many people downloading the demo now. I'm getting awful speeds too. Hopefully it'll get better after a while.

Heck, I still remember two years ago when the RTW demo was released. I'm just as excited about M2TW as I was over RTW. Great games!

I believe SSE2 has to be hardware based no? If yes, then you can't download anything to fix it. You need to get a new processor.

Well, I'm quite positive that Pentium Ms support SSE2 instructions. Even my (pretty ancient) P4 3.0C does. I doubt it's because of that? Anyhow, to be sure, just download CPU-Z and check.

Hi Brock, been some time since I dropped by. I've been green for about a month now (I think).

Okay i Downloaded and i must say its a great game. Ive played the tutroial and Agincourt. The totorial is much like the one on RTW, and thats all i will say.

I think its cool that they brought back the Prisoner function.

As for Agincourt, That was a tough battle. I won but lost over half my forces doing it, so i will have to retry that one.

The fighting is great, and you get mixed up between who is who.

So i give this demo two thumbs up.

It does indeed have SSE2 according to CPU-Z. Do you guys have any idea what else could be wrong?

Steace,

Pentium M supports SSE2, but not fully (it's missing support for about a dozen instructions that the P4 does support). This is most likely the reason you're failing.

You'll need a new processor to run MTW2, I think.

Just done Agincourt... won the second time. The graphics are beautiful! Had to turn off shadows on the battle map though because it was making the game seriously choppy. The unit identities (differently dressed men in a unit) really add realism to the game, you don't notice at first, but look closely and you will se the difference, then afterwards far off views of your units will suddenly look much nicer than in Rome. The AI is a lot better as well. (Although in Agincourt the French were pretty stupid anyway so that's not saying much. I have yet to see the full power of the AI in combat) The combos are really apparent as well, as I saw one being executed on Henry V (which was pretty devestating, but impressive) the dying of soldiers is a lot more realistic in my view, and the blood effects are awesome! Haven't tried Pavia yet but I will soon.

P.S. To any of those who are experincing choppiness even with all grapics settings on low, try turning the shadows off from the options menu via the main menu, that should make thegame a lot smoother, it did with mine.

Wow, almost everyone I know has turned green. Come back to OD once in a while k?

About this SSE2 thing. M2 is the first game that I heard of that requires this. What exactly is it? It's pretty shitty if people have to buy a new processor to play a game. I mean a top of the line graphic card is about $500, a low end processor will cost you $1000+.

It's an evolution of MMX, which you may have heard of - back in 1997 it was the coming thing, and some games required it and so on.

It then turned out that MMX wasn't all that great and although it's been a part of processors since it hasn't really had any focus placed on it.

It's under Instructions in the first tab/screen. Somewhere in the middle.

Nah, even the highest-end processors cost just $999. You can get a decent one for as low as $80 (PentiumD 805 for instance, which is highly overclockable). Processors are really cheap compared to graphics cards.

No problem

Anyway, I tried the tutorial just now. It was basically similar to that in RTW, but the graphics are so much better. The terrain looks really good with new shaders (I assume) and I'm glad that horses in the same unit no longer look identical, even though they look blind to me. Gonna try out the 3 battles soon.

Having seen a pre-release version of M2:TW - I can say that as of a couple of months ago, there was a known problem with some nVidia graphics cards.

I tried that version out but was too incomplete to make any valid comments on it. In particular on my system (with an nVidia graphics card) the game crashed every time I tried to load a battle.

It's possible therefore that a similar problem exists for some users with the demo.

A desktop of course. But then again, it's no use getting conned by those branded PC manufacturers and buying a PC without a decent graphics card. Get a good PC with a good graphics card.

Quoted from Brock:

I have duo core 2.0GHz, 2GB of 667MHz RAM, 256MB 7800. I had everything to the max, I think I experience a couple slight split second lag, I'm not sure. And yes I had it on widescreen.

I hate you Brock. Die!

(Duan Xuan beat me to it)

Aussie, a desktop is the best option for gaming. If a desktop and laptop that cost the same then the desktop will have better hardware (RAM, video card etc).

Another way of looking at it is that if a laptop and desktop had the same specifications then the laptop will cost more than the desktop.

If you want a computer that it really fast to play this game then you will probably have to spend a fair amount of money. Of course if your parents are the ones who will actually be spending the money then lucky you. You should probably buy it from a specialist computer store rather than some place like Dick Smith.

I got a signaturectomy again.

Good, I hate to see that a lot of people cant play the game cause they don't have a specific processor type.

Definitely desktops. You can built quite a good gaming machine at $1000 range.

Btw, how's this for a configuration?
1) Intel Core 2 Duo T7600 Merom 2.33GHz
2) 4GB of RAM
3) Nvidia G8800GTX
