... how do I build spartan hoplites ? Oh, and cretan archers ? I have been able to buy cretan archers as mercenaries, but I do not hope this is the only way to get 'em. When browsing through the buildings, I can't seem to find any that allows me to recruit either of the two unit types.
Can someone help me out here?

Spartan hoplites can only be recruited out of an Army barracks in either Sparta or (I think, not completely sure) Syracuse. And unless you mod the game, you can only get Creten Archers as mercs
both, actually, but more so after the patch, probably because I just happened to go after Crete almost every campaign I played as a hellenic faction or a Roman faction.
I have tried another way of modding the mercenaries. There is now a pool for each region. Thus, recruiting mercenaries in Rhodes will not reduce the number available in Phygria.

Well, I dont like moding the game. Guess there is a reason things are the way they are
Give it a few weeks of intensive playing and you'll change your tune, I assure you. I bet at least half of the regular forummers here are playing campaigns that they've modded in one way or another.

Why bother with a new thread?
The file is export_descr_buildings.txt in the Data folder. MAKE SURE YOU BACK UP FIRST. If you don't grt it right, you game can then be rectified by replacing with the original file.
Just copy down a line, and then replace the unit name with the name for Mercenary Hoplites. Make sure you add it for all levels though.

I wont play a game I need to mod just to make it enjoyable. Anyways, I am having lots of fun now, just having a break from world of warcraft. I doubt I'll play RTW for long...

in that file, there is no list of mercs...where are they?
and spartans can only be built in sparta(or if u have sparta, 1 of the 2) if ur city is big enough

So are you saying that if I am a non-Greek faction and I conquer Sparta, I can make Spartan hoplites?

NO. Only Greeks can train Spartans, and it's only in Sparta or (I think) Syracuse.
