Why do so many people use the word "route" to mean rout? It's just a small thing that drives me mad.

In England, we tend to pronounce route as "root", whereas I get the impression in the USA it is "rout".

If I'm not mistaken, Route came from the French first. Then we took their word for rout. But then again, I might be wrong.
