did you get 1.2 first?

Good times, noodle salad. What makes it so hard is not that you had it bad, but that you're that pissed that so many others had it good." Jack Nicholson

I've had this problem before. It was because I didn't reinstall RTW before putting RTR on. Reinstalling RTW for real worked for me

so I should...
1 - reinstall RTW
2 - Install RTW 1.2 patch
3 - Install RTR 6.0
4 - Install RTR 6.2 patch...
...... is that it?...... is it worth it?
guess i haven't got a choice now that I've screwed up RTW...

Have you had a later version of RTW installed in the past? if not uninstall RTW, delete the RTW folder out of the activision folder in programs and then empty the recycle bin and re-boot.
Install RTW and patch to 1.2, then install RTR and patch to 1.2.

In that case before you do the above you need to do two things after you have uninstalled RTW but before you re-install it.
1/From the start menu type "regedit"
Look in the various folders for a software folder and in them for anything called "The Creative Assembly" and delete it - those words exactly, anything else is a different program. Be very careful as you will stop your computer working if you delete the wrong thing and there is no undo button.
2/From the start menu follow the parth - My computer>C:>Program Files. In there find a file called "Install Shield Installation Information" and delete it. It might be worth saving this folder somewhere. It worked perfectly when I did t, but just in case it might be worth keeping around in case it dosen't work for you.

RTR is very pretty, but it is extremely annoying. If you play BI you can try Goths All Factions Playable mod 2.4 which is the same thing but for Barbarian Invasion. It should load without a problem.
Thanks for trying to help Rabidnid but now BI just crashes to the desktop everytime the opening cinematic finishes.
Wtf is going on here? why do these things never work out for me?
Now I gotta uninstall all my RTW files, reinstall them and redownload all the patches.... there goes several hours of my life.

A lot of what goes wrong is the fault of XP.
Uninstall RTW, then you must delete the "Rome Total War" file out of the activision file as it has all of that RTR crap still in it.
from your desktop go start, my computer, C: drive, programs, activision - in there will be a Rome Total War folder delete it.
Empty your recycle bin and reboot the computer.
Then install Rome Total War and Barbarian Ivasion.
Patch to I.6
If you want you can now install Goths 2.4 all factions playable mod and it should run, it did tend to crash a bit on my computer so skipping it and just playing BI is a solution as well.
