What are the pre-requisites for recruiting Triarii? (heavy spearmen with long spears) I currently only have 3 units and I got all as rewards for taking settlements and I can't recruit them OR retrain them even in my most advanced city the capital - which is maxed out. They are the best cavalry defense you can ask for - how do I get them? Are they only given as a reward?
Thanks
Rob

They still don't show up. My capital is at the largest city size and I have the top of the line barracks built (I think it's Urban Barracks, but it's higher than Army barracks which I already had) In fact I already have everything that is possible to build built. As I said the city is maxed out. Still no Triarii. Any ideas?

Yes I have already recruited those types of units although I'm not sure what you mean by "Marian reforms"... does this mean there are no heavy spearmen available for defense against cavalry? Surely there must be a way to get heavy spearmen.

The Marian reforms are when pass a certain point in the game (usually after you build your first Imperial Palace) and you get to train new units, but you cant train or retrain any of the pre-marian units. Therefore, no Triarii, only Auxilias

Actually, those auxilia you get in post-Marian barracks will do the job that triarii used to do. The light auxilia are upgrades from the velites, legionaries for hastatii/principes, and so forth.

Thanks to everyone for your responses. I didn't realize light Auxilia were meant to replace Triarii. I should've guessed by the long narrow formation. Thanks again for all the responses
