Have you played an entire campaign with absolutely no lost battles? Neither have I, but Iīve come close. I decided to try in my Carthage campaign on H/H. When I finished the game I had lost 6 battles. I will now pass on my newfound pearls of wisdom and look forward to reading yours as I attempt a new perfect game. As Parthia.
1) Cavalry. I cannot stress this enough. Cavalry is the key to winning battles. Not because they crush your opponents troops, but because they can run really fast. Yes, thatīs the secret. When attacked in the open, run the cavalry unit in a square from corner to corner until time runs out. Itīs a cheap win, but it IS a win. When enemy troops have killed every soldier in your city and a massing in the town square - run the cavalry units from corner to corner in the town square until time runs out. As you have already guessed, cavalry will win these battles only when defending!
2) HUGE single navy! 8-10 ships will crush any opponent. Alternatively, "port-hopping". Enemies cannot attack you while docked.
3) When a city has been taken and peasants (or the like) are built to keep the citizens in order so the soldiers once again can go forth and conquer, be careful if they are placed outside the city (this will happen if the city is full). An enemy attacking the peasants will also be attacked by the city UNLESS (this accounts for one of my losses) the city is put under siege first. Poor peasants, never had a chance.
4) If a city is attacked/put under siege and you can tell youīre not going to win - disband all units in the city. The enemy will then simply take over the city with no blood being spilt and, more importantly, no lost battles on your record! You canīt disband generals, so watch out for that pitfall.
5) Donīt go up to an enemy army and attack just to see the strength ratio. If you decide to not attack it actually counts as a loss! Never retreat! If you arenīt sure that you can win an attack, donīt attack. If you are being attacked, have cavalry!
6) Horse-archers will outrun you and shoot you in the back (making me restart my Parthia campaign, dammit!), so the cavalry-trick wonīt help. UNLESS you have a lot of HAīs to shoot his down. Once the enemy cavalry is defeated, use the run-around-the-corners trick.
Any additions from my esteemed co-players?
