Russia is a unique faction, separated in many ways from the rest of the world in Medieval II: Total War. In order for a Russian player to establish themselves as a great power in Europe, they will have to expand and consolidate rapidly and bring their unique and superior cavalry roster to bear on their foes. In this guide, you will be taken through the details of making the most of your first few turns, and the general aims of your strategy as a Russian general.
You can read the new article here in our campaign strategy section. You may leave any comments or discussion in this thread.

Interesting, I usualy have a different strategy for Russia. I send the Faction leader to Moscow, Mikhail to Riga and after my troops are buit up a bit in Novgorod, I send Vladamir to Helsinki.
I will fight for Total War Heaven.
Will You?

Very easy to understand guide. Nicely done.
You might want to include Stockholm and the Scandinavia as another possible expansion route. Stockholm has the potential to be the richest city in the whole game. Not to mention Scandinavia can be easily defended since the AI rarely uses naval invasion.

Very good guide, I love Russia. Another thing that makes Russia good against Mongols is the large amount of bridges in the area.

A good guide, good job!
Russia is one of my two favourite factions and I reckon the advice is sound. Although I don't always press into the furthest east settlements as early as you recommended the reasoning for doing so (The Mongols *shudder*) is sound.
I have to say, that is the most in-depth and useful campaign article on this site about a single faction. I would test it, but I've lost (or my mum purposely chucked in a nuclear testing facility) M2TW disc, and I've got el_bandito's mongol/imurid mod installed, so I'd probably get my ass whipped.

Good point. I personally tend to leave it for a while so as not to waste money on maintaining a fleet, but it is certainly an option, so I will put that in when I get a moment.

Also a good point. Will add that to the guide.
I look forward to more

I liked it, it was very in-depth, but I would've liked to see some pictures.
Think you're a hotshot against the Mongols? Go to the Mongolphobia mod discussions and download the mod, then, you will surely tremble with fear in the face of the Mongols. If you have suggestions/questions, feel free to make a thread. You can download Mongolphobia here. Good luck.

Actually migrating to the British Isles is another option available to the Rus. The Russian HA's and cavalry can do some heavy damage to the scots and english. It also gives you a safe haven from the mongols if you dont think you can handle them at first. Its a fairly good strategem but you'll have to be able to fight with minimal losses in order to take Brittania.
It's for the more suicidal, though, surely? You wouldn't expect someone just starting the game to give it a go, would you?
Would you?

The guide is quiet nice and provides an interesting approach. I tend to behave a bit differently after the Polish. Actually I sign at the start an alliance with Hungarians and HRE which I keep strong till I don’t need them, especially the Hungarians. The Huns will gang bang Byzies and I let them do it. While I take the Danes with the purpose of vassalage to have them as buffer between me and other western Catholics factions. At that point I prepare for the Mongols and when I finish with them then is the Hungarians turn after some nifty political manoeuvres to piss them off and deteriorate the relations for them start war.
