HOWTO: Install patch 1.2 and use the unpacker.

This short guide will hopefully help you with installing patch 1.2 for Medieval II Total War and use the unpacker without incident.

Firstly, you will obviously need to download it. You can download it from many sites, a few of which are linked here.

This Patch is a hefty 650 mb, so if you have dial up, don't even bother unless you want to leave it running overnight. You may find it easier to use a friend's computer which has broadband, but even then it takes 45 mins minimum. And that's on a super fast connection.

Remember, install it to your main M2TW folder, not your data folder. I know its obvious, but some do make that mistake.

NOTE: Many people have had problems installing this patch and M2TW not working. I recommend that you uninstall M2TW, go to where you installed it, delete the SEGA folder (or the Medieval 2 Total War folder if you have another game in the SEGA folder) then reinstall. Then install Patch 1.2 straight on top. It has all patch 1.1 has and more. So there is no need to install patch 1.1 again.

Using the unpacker.

NOTE: BACKUP YOUR DATA FOLDER BEFORE YOU USE THE UNPACKER, AS CA ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGE DONE TO YOUR GAME FROM USING THIS UNPACKER.

Using the file unpacker that comes with the patch can be a little confusing. First its a load of files you dont often see. Batch files for one. Don't worry, you don't have to use these, the unpacker uses them when running. The only batch file you have to use is unpack_all.bat. Just click on it to run. you will have to type Y to all the questions to use it.

It should take quite a while to run, as there is 7gb to unpack. If it happens in a second then something is wrong.

Also, make sure the unpacker is in tools\unpacker. Otherwise it WILL NOT work. Some regions have the patch installing the unpacker in a different part of your M2TW folder. Admiral_Nelson can testify to that one.

Now, pay close attention to this bit, or your game will crash every time you go into a battle.
- NOTE: Due to a timestamp check, the following unpacked files will
cause the game to crash and must be deleted before the game is
launched:

data\descr_geography_new.txt
data\descr_geography_new.db
They're not kidding, delete them. If you don't, you will get an unspecified error every time you go into a battle and CTD.

The readme gives you all the info you need to get the game to read the files, but there is an easier way:

In your main Medieval 2 Total War folder, open preferences.cfg with notepad and scroll down to the bottom and type this:

[io]
file_first = true

then save and close the file. right click on the icon of preferences.cfg and go to properties. From there check the box next to read only and click apply. This will stop the game changing the file to the original content after one run. This way will not allow you to use show_err to find bugs, you have to run from a batch file for that, but it does allow mods to work.

I hope this guide has been of use to you and will help you in using the unpacker the patch. Any suggestions, criticisms, or improvements please don't hesitate to post.

You may also post bugs you have found with the new patch here as well.

I must say that this is the only patch that has been a problem to me, in every game that i have patched it has been easy, just run the patch exe and thats it but in this it is way too frustrating to install the patch then uninstall the whole game and then install the game again and this is something that must be done over and over again, still in the end when everything seems allright you get the error and the game wont run. I have now tried to get the patch work for too many times and i have decided that if i dont get the patch work till the end of this day i wont patch the game. Why in the hell they havce made it so damn hard, they should have made the patch be like in other games, easy to install.

It is easy to install, you just have to uninstall your game, delete all traces of medieval 2 total war from your computer, then reinstall, and install the patch. I got it right first time, it's simple, really.

You must have been doing something wrong. But it's working now. It's worth it, makes the game playable again.

Why won't the patch work? It's not the first time i did it.

I've downloaded the patch, unzipped it, and installed it. I can see all the new stuff like unpacker and everything but when i press to play M2TW it comes up saying "Medieval 2 total war has found an unspecified error and will now exit".

Please help, i don't know what to do
PS: i've already reinstalled the patch but with no effect. I also downloaded it from another website and reinstalled that one but it continues to stuff up.

btw i can't dis install M2TW because it says i have to dis install the patch first but i don't know how to do that

Hmm, you can't uninstall M2TW? That's a problem. The only other way to get rid of it is to manually delete it, you would have to delete the M2TW folder then any traces of it in your C drive if it isn't there already, then you have to delete registry entries, but I can't remember where in regedit they are.

HEy all....Im new here and (sorry) im not very computer literate. Just a quick question..

IM using Vista, and I've finally got Kingdoms to start installing properly. However, when it begins to install Patch 1.2, it speeds through it as expected, until it reaches the "data_2.pack" installation. At this point, it slows down until finally appears to stop progressing altogether.

Im not sure what i should do... should I wait for it, in case it DOES load eventually (bear in mind i've been waiting now for nearly 12 minutes and it hasn't moved s spot) or should I quit the installatoin process and find an alternative solution?

Thanks in advance.

To both of you, bear in mind you only need to unpack the files if you are planning to mod the game.

It also fills a few more gigabytes of your hard drive space.

My first post and I need help.

I just bought MTW II. Installed it and patch 1.02 (according to the home site for MTW II). After two partial campaigns it was obvious that like the previous total war games I needed a mod to get the most out of it.

Unfortunately I ran the unpacker on a Vista computer. It spent a while running (but I couldn't find any evidence that it did anything). I followed the unpacking with Stainless Steel 4.0 and 4.1, started a new campaign and it CTD'd loading the first battle.

I uninstalled and deleted the SEGA folder, reloaded the game and patch, same CTD.

Uninstalled again, reloaded without patching, same CTD.

Now I can't play (at least if I want battles, I haven't tried autoresolving but I'm not interested in playing without being able to fight some battles).

Does anybody have any advice?

You need to delete the two geography files-

data\descr_geography_new.txt
data\descr_geography_new.db

Delete them, and it should be fine.

Also, I think you'd better update to 1.3, and SS is on patch 5.1, IIRC?

I see no evidence of the unpacker having worked. Which means I can't find those two files even though I thought they might be the problem.

I set my folders to show hidden files and ran a search, but no luck. Also my reinstalled M2TW includes the list of saved games (they won't open) I thought my uninstall should have removed. Which suggests Vista has residue from my previous install somewhere.

I think Stainless Steel is on 6 point something, but 4.1 is the last patch before kingdoms IIRC.

For some reason, Vista dumps the files in some system folder, and I haven't a clue where abouts it would be. Try searching for descr_geography_new and you may find something.

The total war center has a helpful thread on Vista and M2TW.

This is what my address bar reads when I am in this thread.

I don't know if it will solve my problem, but I have a direction to work on it.

Thanks to everyone for your help.

I downloaded patch 1.2, and I tried to install it but after it goes through all those files to update, it says 'Error unkown, update cannot be continued'

Any suggestions?

I installed my game on the D drive, not the C drive. I can't find any evidence of the unpacker inside my M2 folders.

Sounds a strange one Ian. What OS have you?
For some reason, Vista dumps the files in some system folder, and I haven't a clue where abouts it would be. Try searching for descr_geography_new and you may find something.
Yes. You install the game into the program files folder but any updates get put into the virtual store. It is most frustrating to deal with but here's how you do it.

1. Go to control panel. Change to classic view.
2. Open folder options. Click the view tab.
3. Check "show hidden files & folders". Press apply or ok.
4. Now go to your user directory on the desktop where your documents & downloads are saved.
5. See the folder called "AppData". Open it.
6. Three folders inside. Open "local" and then "virtualstore".
7. Now go into "program files". If you have run the unpacker, this is where the files end up.
8. There should be a "sega" folder there. Open that and you have the lost files.
9. The bit where you have to be careful..... You can copy these files directly back to the original folder. They may overwrite existing files but they would have done this during installation or unpacking anyway. Very often, tga's & saved games end up here too.
10. Once they are copied, you can delete the original files & folders in the virtual store.

Enjoy your game!

I have some problems with the patching procces.

1.With what am I suppose to open this file? With winrar or just run it like it is.If i run it it goes directly to setup screen and then it shows "Problem with patching procces or something."
2.I cant locate the tools folder. In main installed folder there are only "Data","Miles","packs".
And there are no sub-folders with tools.Does that mean i have to do them myself?Just create them?
3.For the first time i did run unpack_all.bat and it worked its magic for quite some time, but now it goes just for a second.
4.If i ever make it this far to actually do all of this things you posted does that mean that the game is patched or i have to run the setup file for patch?

For any given answers i thank you in advance. =P
