Hi everyone,
I made most units a tad bigger and, as I play on Huge unit sizes, most settlements now can't support my armies, nor those of the enemy.
I'm playing as the Seleucids, and I just conquered Greece & Macedonia from the Bruti, and all I can recruit are the Scythed Chariots, cause there's only about 40 men in those units. The Romans have depleted their population as well, as they've only got Wardogs left in their armies =)
This might also be cause they seem to exterminate every town they capture. Is there a way to remedy this?
Increasing the population at the start?
Decreasing the percent of people killed off when an army 'exterminates' or sacks a town?

Don't let them take the town?

Most players will enslave during the early game to boost their own populations, and in the later part of the game go for exterminate in the latter stages for the cash and crowd-control benefits. I would assume that the Lord AI does the same.

You can change the behavior of a Non-player faction by changing the two-word code phrase in the set-up (one of the text files, I forget the name) from Ghengis Smith to Napoleon Farmer, for example. The first word tells what kind of armies it should build (infantry-heavy, cavalry heavy, balanced, and a few others) and the second is what kind of economy to build (agriculture, etc).

Make a note of which faction behaves poorly in your eyes and which do as you wish, then look up their code phrase in the text file, (make a backup copy first!) and change the poor one to the one you prefer.

It's the descr_strat file in C:\Program Files (x86)\The Creative Assembly\Rome - Total War\data\world\maps\campaign\imperial_campaign or C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Rome Total War Gold\data\world\maps\campaign\imperial_campaign if you're on Steam.

Hahaha, no they were towns that I conquered FROM the Bruti. They literally depopulated the entire map before I got there... Very frustrating.

I actually don't think the code-phrase will do anything, to be honest. It might be the over-aggressiveness that comes with the VH difficulty?

That's possible. I know if it's a small town, the AI will often depopulate it, even in easier difficulties. You could either train peasants in larger towns, march them over into the territory in question, and disband them, or use the add_population console command.

Ah, so it's a common problem with the larger unit sizes and more bloodthirsty AI, then? I hadn't really been confronted with this kind of problem in my decade of RTW. I think the slight increase in unit sizes will probably have tipped the scales...

I tend to run on large and it's still an issue at times.
