Im quite a noob at this game and i am in some desperate need of advice vs elephants. The inlcuded replay is of Macedonia(me) vs Carthage(comp-veryhard difficulty). No matter what i have tried vs their elephants they seemed to be able to counter. Please watch the inlcuded replay and hand out some advice to this big noobie:D.
I'm not an authority on the game by any means, tehdaimyo, but I have watched your replay and I can suggest a couple of things that might help vs elephants...
i) Get your phalanx on the critters... in this battle you had 3-4 units at the front of your line. These guys are great vs elephants. Maybe next time you play out a similar battle, keep a couple of units deeper in your flank to handle an elephant flanking- the ai seems to pull cavalry/ elephant flanking manouvers in the vast majority of battles. Just make sure you turn any phalanx off *guard* mode before each battle- that way they'll routinely attack when threatened.
ii) Keep your archers away from the critters (they seemed to devour archers exclusively in this battle)& only throw cavalry at them if you're flanking them (ie- another unit has already engaged them) and you don't mind losing lots of horses.
iii) Use any advantage that the battlemap offers. Ai seems to favour advancing an army at the human player... set your entire army on any nearby hills- the ai should come to you, & you'll get a subsequent *higher ground* bonus to all combat.
K- hope this helps. Might recommend a great article by frogbeastegg over at totalwar.org. A great place to read up on beginner tips.
Thanks for the tips!! Although after much battling i have found that vs elephants, skirmishers rule:D and also the best way to handle them is to select one of your units and keep taunting them thereby engaging them:). Focussing with onagers and archers is also useful.
Ive tried the phalanxs vs elephants with no success at all. They just run over 2groups of spearmen with no problems. Trying to attack them at the flanks is almost too hard. :(. The map usage tip was useful though. I constantly forget to do that:P.

Good job T- look forward to battling it out online ;-)
Be sure to check out Frog's article, anyhow- some great pointers hidden away in the thing (really... it deserves a plug).

Elephants scare easily, get all your archers to use fire on them they'll retreat but of course will be a problem later on too

You havve to use the BEST phalanx unit vs Elephants. Spartans, Royals, Pharaoh's guards, Bronze shields, and silver shields will do it. Don't waste time with other civ's phalanxes

Or just have 1 unit of archers constantly shooting the elephants. Eventually, they will rout. Altough you might wast all of the archers amunition on this, it's usefull because the elephants are much more expensive.
