the game name says "free for all". hence no teams...
i picked egypt, because i was kind of stuck for a strategy that can take down 5 other players without any help. so i picked what i hoped to be a mobile, yet flexible, force:
4 x pharoah's guards (including general's unit)
2 x desert axemen
4 x pharoah's bowmen
8 x desert cavalry (i love these...)
1 x heavy chariot
1 x chariot archer
(note: no onagers. i completely forgot about them. if i'd have known the chariots would play so little a part in the battle i would have replaced them with more ranged support, i expect. although onagers would have slowed my lines down, and the outcome of the battle may have been different.)
my starting formation was meant to be ready to quickly turn to face an attacker from either of the enemies to my sides.
the game began, and it was clear everyone would camp. the guy on my right was employing a greek square with archers in the middle, with a heavy onager and cav support. i didn't want to get bogged down like that, so i went for the brutii chap to my left. he had a balanced army with 2 onagers, and for infantry was using mostly triarii.
my archers approached and gave the onager crews a bashing... although i was too lazy to move my infantry square when they started taking casualties.
he sent out his general and cav to push me back, i suppose. at this point the numidian on his other side began attacking, and i suppose he lost interest in our archer firefight and went to hold his line against war eles...
my desert cav cut his cav force down and slew his general with minimal losses.
around here i think greece was being crushed between selucidia and SPQR in a double teaming action.
numidia overran the brutii so i withdrew and shot him a bit... my archers fire arrowed the eles so i wouldn't have to worry about them. they went amok.
i moved the formation towards the hill near greece, to finish off the selucid victor of the aftermath of the little alliance he had with SQPR.
numidia moved into the forest, also in the direction of that big slaughter fest on the greek hill... it was covered in corpses by then.
selucia moved off the hill into the forest when my archers started giving them casualties.
after a while of maneuvering, my men occupied part of the hill, and numidia and selucia were facing me from the middle of the forest. the greeks and SQPR were dead, and the brutii were hiding an archer aux under a tree near their starting point, planning their surprise come back...
selucia attacked first, after i boasted to the brutii that desert cav could take down eles. his armoured eles and catas quickly fell to their armour piercing attacks... and sheer numbers :)
the rest of the battle was mopping up the alliance of numidian infantry and selucid pikes. i proposed to the brutii we would call it a draw between our forces, in irony of the fact the whole thing had been a team game. the host then left.
