This is an intense siege assault battle fought at the forum party on 3/19/05. Team one, with Ace_Cataphract, Cheesewiz, and Scipio_Africanus, was composed of the Brutii, Germans, and Scipii respectively. Team two, with Tiresias, Ben_is_Sparky, and myself consisted of the Julii, Greek Cities, and Carthage respectively. Team 1's Romans wasted no time in battering the city and Team 2's armies with six onagers each. The battle consisted mostly of flying onagers rounds and ammo for a while. Then, much to my dismay, a flaming onager round struck the central plaza, slamming into a large group of elephants, three (out of four) units of which then ran amok. Before I was able to select my elephants and kill them, they flattened my general and most of his bodyguard. Cheesewiz shortly thereafter entered the city's gates. From then on, the battle was brutally intense and extremely close. Just see for yourselves! |

This was the best game I have ever been in in retrospect, some astonishing manouvers from Ave_Cataphract. I promise you this has the range of emotions on our side at least. It'll keep you guessing as to who wins each encounter, but be warned, this is very grueling and slow.

I must admit I fell under the impression that some players were sleeping/watching TV during that battle.
What would I say to single players
Scipii - hm, relatively well done, although some groups were unused (looked like bug though)
Brutii - Well played, sad he had the farthest distance do uncovered back - he would be more threatening I believe
German - He could do so well and did so miserably...He should have known the power of sacred bands and spartan hoplites
ok, those were the attackers - not bad imho
Julii - Why Principes??? Army was not too good, but battle performance wasn´t bad.
Greek - He made the game 2,25vs3 instead 3v3 imho. His onager deployment was not good, and when he saw how it went, he should have redeployed immediately! Later, there were standing unused units of spartans, which should have be used to reinforce certain places. If he played it well, defenders would win easily I believe.
Carthage - Well, I think it was above moderate performance - sometimes reinforcements should be sent elsewhere, but it could be a lot worse.
So, generally, one big mistake of defenders - while they were rained upon by fiery ammo, they should have spread - casualties would be far less. Later, when the gates were penetrated, they could go back to phalanx. Another mistake was that they should have put their valuable units in narrow streets where they would be invulnerable by onagers.
The battle would be good if Germans used their archers well, Julii had units with higher morale, Carthaginian was a little more flexible and Greek player didn´t sleep...
I would never give it rating 5 though
If I rated drama and skill overall, it would be drama of 4 and skill of 2 - so I gave 3 |
